9/29/2016 - City continues drought advisory, asks residents to conserve water

Sept. 29, 2016. The City Water Department reminds its customers to voluntarily reduce their water consumption by 10%. Conservation efforts are needed because of low reservoir levels caused by the extended period of drought in Connecticut and throughout New England. As of Sept. 28, the level at Waterbury reservoirs was down to 53.5% or a 194-day supply. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently changed Connecticut’s condition to “severe drought” level. By conserving water now, we will have additional supplies to meet future water needs during this period of extended drought.

Some of the largest losses of water and highest water/sewer bills are the result of toilet leaks, which can go unnoticed for months because they empty down the drain. Here are two ways to check for toilet leaks:

  • Put food coloring in the toilet tank. If it reaches the bowl, there is a leak and you need to replace the flapper valve.

  • If you hear water running in your toilet when you have not flushed it recently, there is a leak that needs repair.
