City of Waterbury Opens Cooling Center and Issues Extreme Heat Safety Reminder
In response to the extreme heat expected across Connecticut this week, Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. announced that the City of Waterbury will open a cooling center and reminds residents that city pools and splash pads will operate during their regular seasonal hours to help residents stay safe during the prolonged heat wave.
The City's cooling center will be open beginning Tuesday, June 30 through Sunday, July 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the North End Recreation Center, 262 North Main Street.
“With temperatures expected to reach dangerous levels over the coming days, I encourage all residents to take this heat seriously and make use of the resources the city has available,” said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. “If you do not have access to air conditioning, please take advantage of our cooling center, city pools, splash pads, libraries, or other air-conditioned public spaces. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.”
Residents are reminded to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Older adults, young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and those working outdoors are especially at risk for heat-related illness.
