City of Waterbury Provides Update on Water Main Repairs and Ongoing Boil Water Advisory

(WATERBURY) The City of Waterbury is providing an update on the repair work to the Huntingdon Avenue water main and the status of the City’s water system following yesterday’s planned shutdown.

  • Water was shut off at approximately 1:00 pm on Monday to allow for the installation of 30-inch insertion line stops.
  • Over the next several hours, contractors successfully installed the valves, and water service was restored at approximately 8:00 pm. The system was then slowly refilled overnight.
  • Due to the elevation gradient in the system, residents who lost water last had their service restored first, while those who lost it first had service restored subsequently.
  • Crews worked through the night and will continue flushing the system throughout the day today to remove air pockets and discolored water, while ensuring chlorinated water reaches all parts of the pipeline.
  • Residents may continue to experience low water pressure while flushing is ongoing. This step is necessary to maintain water quality and restore full service.
  • Laboratory staff are collecting water samples for third-party bacterial testing, with results expected within 24 hours.
  • Crews are working today to bring the bypass system online, which will help avoid future interruptions.
  • The City is aware of the low water pressure around Crosby High School and Wallace Middle School and has adjusted the flushing schedule in that area accordingly.
  • Watertown was not affected by the shutdown, as its system was isolated prior to the work commencing.
  • Updates have been provided to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Waterbury Health Department.

Boil Water Advisory Remains in Effect

Residents who experienced a loss of water pressure or a complete shutdown during either of the recent water interruptions remain under a Boil Water Advisory. It is recommended that those residents boil water before drinking or cooking. Instructions are available on the Waterbury Health Department website. This advisory does not apply to residents who did not experience a loss of pressure or service.

Guidance for Residents

  • If you are experiencing no water, please call the Water Department (203)574-8251. This is likely due to air in the system or internal plumbing, and a crew will be dispatched.
  • If you are experiencing low pressure, this is due to ongoing flushing and tank refilling.
  • If you are experiencing discolored water, please continue running faucets where possible while crews work to mitigate the issue.

Mayor Paul Pernerewski expressed his appreciation to residents for their understanding during this process. “We know these repairs have caused significant inconvenience, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of Waterbury residents,” said Mayor Pernerewski. “Our crews and contractors have been working around the clock, and together we are making steady progress toward restoring the system safely.”

The City of Waterbury will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
