4/18/2024 - PRESS RELEASE REALIGNMENT OF THE WALNUT STREET, EAST FARM STREET, NORTH WALNUT STREET INTERSECTION

PRESS RELEASE (FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION)

REALIGNMENT OF THE WALNUT STREET, EAST FARM STREET, NORTH WALNUT STREET INTERSECTION (LONG VERSION)

April 15, 2024

The City of Waterbury has received a grant in support of traffic safety improvements at the intersection of East Farm Street and Walnut Street. The grant will be provided by the State of Connecticut through its Local Road Accident Reduction Program (LRARP). All improvements will be in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines.  The primary goal of the LRARP is the prevention of accidents involving fatalities or serious injuries to road users at high accident locations.

The intersection of East Farm Street and Walnut Street has been deemed high risk due to the elevated volume of accidents at this location. In an effort to reduce the risk of these types of accidents the City has decided to incorporate a number of changes at this location. The first change will be to convert the intersection of East Farm St and Walnut St from a side street stop-controlled intersection to an all-way stop controlled intersection. The second change will be adding sidewalk ramps, pedestrian island, bump outs and crosswalk pavement markings, to help promote pedestrian safety in the area.

The anticipated construction cost will be approximately $850,000. The LRARP Grant will provide $717,300 of the construction cost and the City of Waterbury will fund the balance of the costs. Preliminary design has been completed and the project is slated for construction during summer of 2024. This program will be administered by the City of Waterbury.

It is the City’s policy to keep residents informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  The intersection improvements will be constructed entirely within the City’s Right of Way. It is important that the community share its concerns and provide input to assure the project is a success. For this reason, the City will be conducting a presentation outlining the details of the proposed improvements and soliciting questions, comments and suggestions from the public.

The Public Information Meeting will be held in person at 235 Grand Street City Hall in the Cass Gilbert Room on April 24, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. and via zoom, in an effort to make the meeting more accessible to the public. The meeting site is ADA accessible.  The project information will also be available at the Department of Engineering office and on line at the City’s website.
