Waterbury Water Department to Start Water Main Cleaning and Cement Lining Project on East Main Street, July 10th, 2017
As part of Waterbury Water’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of aging infrastructure, a cleaning and cement lining improvement project has been scheduled for the existing 8 inch water main on East Main Street between Frost Road and Pierpont Road. The work process involves a trench-less pipe rehabilitation method called Mechanical Cleaning and Cement-Mortar Lining. This technology allows us to rehabilitate the 100+ year old 8 inch cast iron water main, at a fraction of the cost of new construction and minimize disruption to the community and also replace valves along its length. This will enable higher flow rates, improved water quality and pressure, and will facilitate our ability to respond to future emergencies.
Waterbury Water and the project contractor Heitkamp Inc. have scheduled the project construction start work on July 10th, 2017 at the East Main Street and Frost Road connection. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2018.
While the water main which serves your house is being rehabilitated and will be out of service, the contractor will arrange a temporary above ground bypass connection to provide uninterrupted water service. Using a series of access pits dug approximately every 500 feet, crews will use a mechanical device to scrape and clean the inside of the water mains, followed by the application of a concrete mortar lining to protect the pipes from future corrosion. Because the water main does not need to be replaced in its entirety, disruption to traffic will be limited.
During construction residents, motorists and pedestrians can expect to see:
- Hoses connected to fire hydrants and above ground plastic piping
- Intermittent traffic lane and street parking closures
- Water released for required water quality-related flushing
- Construction equipment and materials
- Steel plate road covers for temporary street openings
- Some limited asphalt paving areas
