8/13/2015 - Water Dept. starts water main cleaning and cement lining projects

Waterbury Water Department to Start Water Main Cleaning and Cement Lining Project on Holly St., Quentin St., and Spring Brook Rd.

As part of Waterbury Water’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of aging infrastructure, an improvement project has been scheduled for Holly St., Quentin St., and Spring Brook Rd. This project will not only provide for the rehabilitation of the 80+ year old cast iron water pipes, but will also replace the shut off valves along their lengths. This will enable higher flow rates, improved water pressure and water quality, and will facilitate our ability to respond to future emergencies.

Waterbury Water and our contractor Heitkamp Inc, have scheduled work beginning the week of August 17, 2015 and concluding by mid-November, 2015. Crews will first set up a bypass, above-ground water main to serve all customers during the time that the buried water main is under repair. Using a series of access pits dug approximately every 500 feet, crews will use a mechanical device to scrape and clean the inside of the water mains, followed by the application of a concrete mortar lining to protect the pipes from future corrosion. Because the water main does not need to be replaced in its entirety, disruption to traffic will be limited.

During construction residents, motorists and pedestrians can expect to see:

  • Hoses connected to fire hydrants and above ground plastic piping
  • Intermittent traffic lane and street parking closures
  • Water released for required water quality-related flushing
  • Construction equipment and materials
  • Steel plate road covers for temporary street openings
  • Some limited asphalt paving areas

It’s important for pedestrians and motorists to keep an eye on sidewalks, streets and local signage. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience you may experience.

Project details and a map are available at the Water Department Office located at 21 East Aurora Street. For questions regarding this project please contact the Bureau Engineering Office at 203-574-8251 ext. 7669.
