Join the Mattatuck Museum Team

to Install Waterbury's

Largest Community Mural Project

Saturday, June 9, 2012

11:00am-1:00pm

The Mural will be assembled on this "blank canvas" at 90 South Main Street.

The City of Waterbury and the Arts and Culture Collaborative have been chosen to participate in the state's City Canvases Initiative.

The project is the creation of a large porcelain mosaic designed by Connecticut artists Joanne and Bruce Hunter. The mosaic will be composed of 60 individual 3 x 5 ft. panels, each composed of thousands of individual colored tiles.

Assembling the community mosaic requires hundreds of volunteers.

JOIN THE MATTATUCK'S

VOLUNTEER TEAM!

The artists will transfer a color design to each panel and cut tiles in advance, similar to a paint-by number kit. The panels and tiles will be transported to the Palace Theater stage for mosaic panel fabrication. Panels will be set up on tables and community volunteers will adhere tiles into the patterned designs.

SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER by calling

(203) 753-0381 x10 or email

cfilippone@mattatuckmuseum.org

Volunteers should park at the Palace Theater - we will have a parking pass for the volunteers.

Entry to the Palace will be from Brooks Street- the side loading dock.  We will start promptly at 11am with a brief instruction session.

Opening Reception In the Shadow of St. Anne's: Life in a Changing Community

This exhibit focuses on the history and reinvigoration of Waterbury's South End.

On view in the Community Gallery through

October 21, 2012.

Saint Anne's Catholic Church, now known as The Shrine of Saint Anne for Mothers, is one of the architectural treasures of Waterbury. Founded in the late 19th century by French Canadian immigrants, the community of Saint Anne's parish played an important role in the shaping of the South End neighborhood. This exhibition tells the story of the church's founding and development, the inter-ethnic neighborhood that flourished around it, the gradual decline of the neighborhood and Saint Anne's and the efforts of numerous stakeholders to rebuild the once-vibrant community around the church.

In the Shadow is generously supported by The Connecticut Humanities Council.
