Deford frank
Please join us
for a stimulating conversation with acclaimed writer
Frank Deford about his new novel "Bliss, Remembered,"
a love story set in Germany at the 1936 Berlin Olympics,
which then goes through the start of World War II.
Mr. Deford will discuss the inspiration and challenges of
writing a love story and a sports story which includes a
real life portrayal of swimming star Eleanor Holm, as well
as Nazi leaders Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler.

Writer and commentator, Frank Deford is the author of 16 books, including the novels The Entitled and Everybody's All-American. His commentary on current events is broadcast every Wednesday on National Public Radio Morning Edition. He is senior correspondent for the HBO show Real Sports
with Bryant Gumbel.
He is also a Senior Contributing Writer at Sports Illustrated.

Publisher's Weekly raves, "Told as a memoir, Deford's newest is entertaining and thought provoking. He has superb sense of character and period, and readers will at once feel drawn into turbulent times. The memoir device, while overused in many books, is put to excellent effect, allowing readers to easily identify with Sydney's son and interviewer, Teddy. The surprising twist will catch readers off guard but not leave them feeling cheated. This is a poignant story, utterly charming and enjoyable."

The program begins at 6:00, all are welcome free of charge. For more information about this or other programs, and the museum's collections, please call 203-753-0381 ext 10 or visit the website at

Following the discussion there will be a book signing.

 Great Jazz by Cookie Thomas
CookieThomas
First Thursday, November 4th, 5:30-7:30 pm
A versatile vocalist, and an undiscovered treasure, Richard Thomas'
career began in Philadelphia in 1960 when he had the opportunity, at fourteen, to open for B.B. King.

Richard's current CD, Touch You With A Song, produced and arranged by pianist John di Martino, is a complement to his collection, which includes The Pleasure Of Your Company and Holiday Classics, both arranged by pianist Lynne Arriale.
Richard's voice is especially suited to well-known classic standards. Richard draws his inspiration from the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Hartman. In fact, you can hear a bit of each when Richard sings.
Richard has shared the stage with pianists Alan Simon, Danny Mixon, Rob Silvan, David Epstein, Chris Casey, Jay Rowe, Chris Coogan, Joe McWilliams, and Sarah Jane Cion, winner of the 1999 Great American Jazz Piano competition. Richard also performs with guitarists Chris Morrison, Carmine Marino and John Cain. Drummers include Bobby Leonard, Don Mulvaney, and Arti Dixon, who toured with Ahmid Jamal. In addition, Richard has performed with saxophonists Marion Meadows, Houston Pearson, Lonnie Youngblood, and Ken Gioffre of AWB. He has also performed with bassists Bill Conway, Dave Daddario, and famed Phil Bowler, who accompanied Horace Silver. He has also performed with the world famous Joyce DiCamillo Trio.
