Gallery Talk and Tour: Home Sweet Home: How the Brookside Community was Built

Brookside Ribbon CuttingJoin former Naugatuck Valley Project executive director Carol Burkhart Lyons as she tells the story of how a group of citizens banded together to finance and build the state's first Limited Equity Co-operative.  This type of co-operative enables families, who would otherwise rent, to become home owners by contributing sweat equity or a down payment, performing routine ongoing maintenance, and managing the community themselves.  Learn how it was done and why Limited Equity Co-operatives are a practical, successful affordable housing option.  Then tour of the Brookside Community including one of the residences.

OPENING RECEPTION RESCHEDULED!

Our Beautiful City - Vintage Postcards and Photographs of Waterbury
with Speaker Charles Monagan
Charles MonaganSee vintage photographs and postcards from the turn-of-the-century that show Waterbury at its zenith!  Depicting Waterbury's grand architecture, you'll learn about beautiful buildings and landmarks that still grace our city today.  From the years of horse-drawn carriages and horses drinking in the Welton Fountain to the years of trolley cars and automobiles, Waterbury will grow before your eyes!  Photographs by Republican American stringer Frederick Stone are also on display along with many of the glass plates used to create them.  The clearness and fidelity of Stone's photographs made them ideal for printing as postcards and some of his photographs appear to be exactly the pictures used in later cards.

Charles Monagan will open the exhibition, describing what made, and still makes, Waterbury a beautiful city-one of which we all should be proud.  As editor of Connecticut Magazine and a Waterbury resident, Mr. Monagan has spent years discovering and writing about the people, places and things in his home state.  His remarks will be followed by an Opening Reception and the opportunity to interact with Mr. Monagan, and the exhibition guest-curators Michael Dooling and John Wiehn.
