If you're looking for something to keep the kid's busy during the long Thanksgiving weekend, then November's Discovery Club is for you! Muscian Chris Merwin has traveled the world in search of unusual instruments and musical styles. Not only will Chris be demonstrating these wonderful instruments, but kids will actually get a chance to play them! Discover the world of music on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. It'll be fun for the whole family!

Explore Instruments From Around the World at Discovery Club!
|
 Hear and play musical instruments from around the world. Globe-trotting musician Chris Merwin's program is fun, educational and fully interactive. Kids will be introduced to a variety of curious instruments, learning the history of how each came into being and the culture of the country from which each came. Play the steel drum and a ten-foot long Tibetan trumpet. Sing, play calypso Simon Says, and do the limbo! It's the perfect way to experience how cultural harmony and diversity always shine through in music.
Over the past 21 years, Chris Merwin has traveled the globe to study music and perform, and has become an accomplished player of unusual instruments such as the Arabic oud, Hawaiian steel guitar, and the Japanese shakuhachi flute. His travels have taken him to Tibet, Japan, China, Egypt, Hawaii, and many other locations. Performing for children throughout the tri-state area over the past 16 years, Mr. Merwin has performed at the United Nations and for local congressmen, and has made numerous appearances on TV and radio.
Come experience the music and instruments of the world at November's Discovery Club. Discovery Club is a monthly program designed for kids who like experimenting and discovering new worlds, and meets on the last Sunday of the month from 2 - 4 pm. Each month participants stretch their imaginations by exploring science, technology, and the arts. Monthly attendance is not necessary BUT kids won't want to miss any of these exciting programs! Join us for screenings of Global Lens 2009 - ten award-winning feature films from Argentina, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Indonesea, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Morocco and Mozambique. The series includes the Macedonian submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, I Am From Titov Veles, along with critical favorites Getting Home (Ecumenical Jury Prize, Berlin International Film Festival),Mutum (Directors' Fortnight) and Possible Lives (Pavilion les Cinémas du Sud, Cannes Film Festival). The entire 10-film program delivers a choice slate of storytelling from regions not typically seen in mainstream cinema. Experience, explore, discover, and change the way you see the world!
On November 29th see Song From the Sounthern Seas, the 2008 film from Kazakhstan directed by Marat Sarulu. A darkly comic feud is ignited when a Russian man suspects that his son is the result of an affair between his wife and a Kazakh neighbor. This beautiful film is intended for adult audiences.

National Recording Star Rachel Z at All-Jazz First Thursday!

Rachel Z, a resident artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp since 2007, is a jazz piano virtuoso! Outstanding and passionate, she's a true pioneer of modern jazz. One of the most exciting female jazz musicians of the 21st century, Rachel worked with Wayne Shorter on the Best Contemporary Jazz Grammy Award-winning album, responsible for the CD's synthesized orchestral settings and acoustic piano solos, and has also performed with the likes of Najee and Peter Gabriel.
You won't want to miss the opportunity to hear Rachel perform her innovative and imaginative arrangements. First Thursdays, a fun after-hours event, is a great way to meet up with friends, network with business associates, and enjoy live music from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Admission is $7 for museum members and $15 for non-members. Join the museum or renew your membership on First Thursday and get in free.
The first four Jazz First Thursdays are made possible through the generous support of Mayor Jarjura's Arts and Tourism Commission.

Introduce your toddler to the world of art! Discover the stories, colors, shapes, and movement in the art collection, and make an art project with your child.
Tiny Tot Art is scheduled while the museum is closed to other visitors, allowing you and your child freedom to enjoy the art, each other, and new-found friends!
