A Message From Catherine
Whether you're an experienced antiques collector or always wanted to become one but were unsure how to start, the museum's new program, All About Antiques, will answer your questions! This brunch and lecture series features experts from the Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association, each speaking on a different facet of collecting. Not only will you learn about antiques but you'll learn about the history of the decorative arts in the US!
PS - This Saturday the Connecticut Guitar Society is holding an outstanding free event, Guitar Under the Stars, for all you music lovers. Featuring Daniel Salazar, Jr. performing with the Hartford Festival Orchestra, this event showcases the talents of many exceptional guitarists.

Antiques Brunch Series Tells "All About Antiques"

Join us for brunch and learn All About Antiques at a four-part lecture series held in partnership with the Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association. You won't want to miss the opportunity to benefit from the insights of "Antiques Capitol" experts as they discuss style characteristics, quality issues, and collectors' concerns.
Each Sunday features a unique type of antique collecting:

Connoisseurship of American Weathervanes presented by David A. Schorsch of American Antiques
September 20th:
Wayne Mattox Talks Antiques - humor, history, and how-to facts about antique treasure hunting presented by Wayne Mattox of Mattox Antiques
September 27th:
Persian Rugs and the Stories They Tell presented by Karen Reddington-Hughes of Abrash Galleries'
October 4th:
American Classical Period Furniture
Admission to All About Antiques is $10 per session for museum members, $15 per session for non-members, and includes a light brunch, the lecture, and admission to museum exhibits. Become a museum member at All About Antiques and admission for that session is free. Register for all five sessions and receive a $5 discount on the series.  The second Sunday of every month is Museum Sunday! Explore the museum at no charge, and enjoy free tours of the art and history galleries.
September's Museum Sunday features the unveiling of our newly reinstalled 20th century art gallery. More than a year in planning, the museum's collection was examined to make sure every object received attention - some works were conserved, others were newly framed. Recent acquisitions by artists Cleve Gray and Robert Motherwell, and significant pieces by Anni Albers and Peter Poskas that have never been displayed are now on view.
Art galleries feature 300 years of work by Connecticut artists. The history exhibit provides dramatic you-were-there experiences of the history of the Waterbury region, and the Waterbury Button Museum displays 10,000 exquisite buttons from all over the world. New family activities every month!

2009 Orton P. Camp Jr. Lecture - Back Stairs: Domestic Servents in 19th and 20th Century New England
|
Jennifer Pustz, Ph.D., museum historian at Historic New England and author of a forthcoming book on servants in the 19th and early 20th centuries, will present the history of domestic service. We are pleased to hold this program in the former home of the Camp family, a grand Victorian that held many wonderful memories for Orton P. Camp, Jr.

Introduce your toddler to the world of art! Discover the stories, colors, shapes, and movement in the art collection, and make an art project with your child.
Tiny Tot Art is scheduled while the museum is closed to other visitors, allowing you and your child freedom to enjoy the art, each other, and new-found friends!

Radio Personality Tom Chute Awarded Inaugural Brass Button Award
|
It is with great pleasure that the museum announces that radio personality Tom Chute has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the museum's Brass Button Award. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of an individual from the greater Waterbury area to the cultural and social enrichment of their community.
For over 25 years, Tom Chute has steadfastly donated his time and talents toward the enrichment of the greater Waterbury community. A radio broadcaster for almost 40 years, he has been Waterbury's favorite morning host on WATR Radio, 1320 AM for 24 years and now also serves as the station's program director and general manager. Mr. Chute's community service began as school student, donating his time and efforts to many town organizations and serving as a Southington Red Cross volunteer and board member. As a radio personality Mr. Chute has continued putting his belief in community service into action both personally and by using his broadcast facility as a way to help others. He helps wherever and in any way he can, as an emcee, performer, board member and advocate. He has contributed to countless organizations that make the community stronger including: The American Cancer Society, Children's Community School, Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries, Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury OIC Inc., Saint Mary's Hospital, St. Vincent DePaul Shelter, The United Way, Waterbury Hospital, and Waterbury Public Schools. His annual Christmas Shows featuring WATR staff and annual fall musicals at Seven Angels Theatre have raised thousands of dollars for WATR's Sunshine Fund Drive for needy children and families.
Tom Chute will be presented with the Brass Button Award on Thursday, September 30th with a dinner in his honor at the Villa Rosa in Waterbury. For more information about the award or to register for the award dinner call the museum at 203-753-0381 ext 10.
