The next 10 days are going to be a whirlwind of activity here at the Mattatuck Museum, and there is sure to be something to please everyone! Start on Thursday with the rare opportunity to meet two artists and chat with them about their works. Saturday is Connecticut Open House Day with guided tours, a kinetic sculpture workshop, and free admission. Monday offers Tiny Tot Art for preschoolers - one of my personal favorites. Then, for those who are history buffs, Carolyn Ivanoff tells tales of the horrors and successes of Civil War Medicine on Wednesday. Choose the ones that intrigue you the most and I'll see you at the museum!

Meet Tim Prentice and Danielle Mailer!
|
Join artists Tim Prentice and Danielle Mailer as they share their artistic inspirations and discuss their work processes. Prentice will discuss the importance of precision and calculation in designing perfectly balanced sculptures that move in air currents, and explain the process for creating the majestic sculptures on display, starting with sketches, moving to models, calculating dimensions and weights, evaluating the installation site, and installing the final work of art. Mailer describes her development as a painter, the techniques she applies in adding detail and symbolism, how her life experiences influence her expressive and provocative work, and why she took the bold step of moving from traditional subject matter to painting her "inner reality."

Guided Tours, Kinetic Sculpture Workshop and Free Admission!
CT Open House Day at the Mattatuck Museum!
|
Free admission, guided tours, and a family kinetic sculpture workshop are highlights of the museum's 5th Annual Connecticut Open House Day. Special guided tours include the art galleries at 10:30 am, the regional history exhibit at 2:00 pm, and the Saint Mary's Hospital exhibition at 3:30 pm. Drop by the kinetic sculpture workshop, Objects in Motion, any time from 12 - 2 pm and learn to use body, mind and spirit to create sculptures set in motion by the wind. Take inspiration from the kinetic sculptures created by artists Alexander Calder and Tim Prentice, and turn common objects and materials into works of art that will be added to a community sculpture.
Connecticut Open House Day is a celebration of the state's fascinating world of art, history, film, and tourism, sponsored by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism (CCT). Approximately 250 organizations and attractions are expected to participate, including several in Waterbury. Visit the Mattatuck Museum, Timex Museum, Palace Theater, and Seven Angels Theater and make an entire day in Waterbury!

Art Program for Preschoolers Next Monday!

Introduce your toddler to the world of art! Discover the stories, colors, shapes, and movement in the art collection, and make an art project with your child.
Tiny Tot Art is scheduled while the museum is closed to other visitors, allowing you and your child freedom to enjoy the art, each other, and new-found friends!
Children's admission is $4 for members and $7 for non-members. Admission is free for adults accompanying children. For more information or to register call (203) 753-0381 ext 10.

The Horrors and Successes of Civil War Battlefield Medicine

 Civil War Medicine: Myth, Maggots, Minie Balls, Gangrene, and Glory
The practice of battlefield medicine during the Civil War was arduous. While fighting, soldiers were likely to sustain terrible wounds and shattered bones, and while in camp, the lack of sanitation resulted in rampant disease. Medical knowledge was limited and a new bullet introduced during the war increased shooting range, accuracy, and speed.
Join us and learn from Carolyn Ivanoff about the practice of battlefield medicine in the 1860s - practices that saved lives and discoveries that are still influencing modern medicine today. She'll tell tales of heroes and life-saving medical practices under the horrific conditions of war, and dispel myths that Civil War surgeons were butchers. In fact, battlefield amputations saved most lives and were done with anesthesia, not merely a bullet to bite!
Admission is free for museum members and $5 for non-members.
