Application Information for Elderly and Disabled Renters Rebate Program          

WATERBURY, CT, May 10, 2004 – Applications for elderly and totally disabled renters rebate program will be taken at the Tax Assessor's Office, 235 Grand Street beginning May 17, 2004 through September 15, 2004.

Applications will be taken from 9 am until 12 noon.  The following schedule must be adhered to: last name beginning A to E on Mondays, F to J on Tuesday, K to O on Wednesday, P to T on Thursday and U to Z on Friday.

To qualify persons must be 65 years of age or older by December 31, 2003, or be 100 percent totally disabled before turning 65 receiving benefits in 2003.

 Applicants must show proof of rent, gas, electric or oil bills for 2003 in the form of paid bills, receipts, cancelled checks or statements for the entire year.

Income proof consists of all taxable and non-taxable income for 2003 in the form of income tax returns or statements of income for the entire year.

Persons who have a spouse in a nursing home on Title 19 can submit a letter from the administrator stating the spouse is on this program and the length of time they are residing there.  In this instance, the Social Security earning of the nursing home resident will not be included as income.  Persons receiving state financial assistance can apply this year but the assistance payments will affect the amount of the check they would have received.  Persons wishing to apply under the totally disabled portion on this programs must furnish a TPQY Statement from the Social Security Office or written documentation from any other government source stating applicant is totally disabled and dates of certification or 1099 SA Statement from Social Security showing a Medicare deduction.  Veteran's pensions and railroad retirement earning are also included.  Income limits are $26,500 for single and $32,300 for married couples.

No verbal or handwritten documentation will be accepted.  Applicants are asked to be sure they have all the necessary paperwork with them when they file or the application cannot be processed at that time.
