MAYOR O’LEARY INVITES RESIDENTS TO BIKE TO WORK MAY 23

City Officials, Business Leaders and Bicycle Community
Celebrate National Bike To Work Month

In observance of National Bike Month, the City of Waterbury, Greater Waterbury YMCA, and Council of Governments of the Central Naugatuck Valley are sponsoring Waterbury Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 23.

The public is invited to join Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O’Leary and other city officials at the commuter parking lot on Chase Parkway located across from Naugatuck Valley Community College. Bikers will depart the commuter lot at 8 a.m. and will bike a route through downtown Waterbury to the Waterbury YMCA. The Y will be treating bikers to free breakfast, bike storage, and locker room access.

If you don’t live within biking distance of work, there are a number of park and ride lots available for bicycle commuting. A list of free lots can be found on the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s website:
ttp://www.ct.gov/dot/cwp/view.asp?Q=259406&a=1390.
Free parking is also available at area train stations.

The Council of Governments of the Central Naugatuck Valley and Bike Walk Connecticut are co-sponsoring the event as a means of encouraging bicycling. Bike commuting reduces vehicle traffic,
avoids pollution, saves gas, and is a healthy way to travel. The City of Waterbury has been working towards building the
Naugatuck River Greenway trail and more bike friendly streets to encourage biking in the City. Bike riders should be comfortable biking with traffic before attempting commuting. Bike commuters are expected to follow all traffic signs, signals, and laws.
